TC - How to start your trainer career

Why

If you couldn’t decide whether you want to be a trainer or not, if you have no idea about trainers and training, or if you just wonder the motivation of other trainers, here you can find WHY to become a trainer :D You can start by watching this video, if this didn't convince you, below are some great reasons to start an ESTIEM trainer career!

  • ESTIEM is our playground to improve ourselves and Trainings are the best places to achieve this improvement
  • You can learn a lot from attending a training, but even more by delivering it yourself! By delivering a training, you can improve your presentation and moderation skills, self-confidence, planning ability etc.
  • With trainings we learn, share, grow together.
  • On a job interview many people say they attended trainings on project management etc. You can say you DELIVERED trainings multiple times all over Europe on Project Management etc.

To become a trainer, motivation is crucial. Below are the motivations of some of our ESTIEM Trainers with their own words:

Sarah Kexel

The moment I like the most of being a trainer is when I see this Ahahh-face of the participants, when they realise what they just learned and how it can change their lives.

Gregor Herr

You gain as an internal result satisfaction and personal growth by working on an external result - developing others. Isn't that great

Selin Bekir

To improve others while improving myself

Kerem Çirpan

To facilitate the learning of people

Tatiana Metasova

To share knowledge with participants with diverse cultural or professional backgrounds and learn from them. I love to see curiosity in their eyes , and understanding in the end. I believe my trainings might be useful for them in the future and it makes me happy

What

Unlike lectures, trainings allow the knowledge of the participants to be blended into the transfer as well, so participants don't only learn from the trainer, but also from each other. An experienced trainer can teach by facilitating discussions between participants and therefore provide a more internalised learning experience. To learn more about what a training is, check out the training BPD, or take a look at this example of a training schedule.

Through training, experience and knowledge can both be transfered to the next generation and internalised, making sure that we don't lose any valuable competences. This allows the newer generation to start one step ahead and therefore reach newer heigths than it would have otherwise.

In ESTIEM, accredited ESTIEM Trainers are "a selection of trainers whose quality has been approved by the ESTIEM Training Committee. Only these trainers are qualified to deliver for ESTIEM as an official ESTIEM Trainer inside and outside of the organisation." Please note that everybody can deliver trainings, but only when you are accredited you will be training as an official ESTIEM trainer, promising the quality of your work.

For more information about what behaviour is expected from an ESTIEM trainer, check it out here.

How

As an enthusiastic ESTIEMer, you decided to become a Trainer in ESTIEM. If you wonder how you can do it and find out the steps that you need to take. Here are the answers for you! ;)

·      HOW to become a Trainer?

The process of becoming a Trainer in ESTIEM is basically:

1) Attending a Training New Trainers (TNT) Event

2) Delivering Trainings and writing their reports

It doesn't have to be in that order, although it is recommended in case you have the opportunity to.

A TNT is an event where trainers with remarkably high experience pass on their knowledge and experience on the art of training delivery to the next generation of trainers. At the end of the event, you get to deliver a training to both fellow participants and trainers to get valuable feedback.

Some tips:

  • You don't necessarily need to go to a TNT before you start delivering training
  • You can already learn about trainings and what they look like by attending one
  • In the beginning, it is a good idea to co-deliver with a more experienced trainer
  • Try to attend a TNT as soon as you find the opportunity, but use the time until that to practise your skills already
  • A Council Meeting is a great place to deliver your first training! You can apply for this after the open call is sent, usually about 3 months before the next CM.

How to prepare a training?

If you attended a TNT event, preparation process for you might be clearer than for those who haven’t participated one yet. However, here are some tips and tricks to prepare for a training session as a Trainer.

  1. Clarify your goals for the training: What exactly do you want to achieve with this training session?
  2. Most training sessions have some structure in common. This means that there are basically 3 parts in a training session –introduction, learning, recapping.
  3. Check out the materials that we have on the portal, there could be useful theories for in your training.
  4. You can check out reports on the portal, see if there is already a schedule on your topic that you can look at.
  5. Last thing you can do is to create a detailed schedule. You can clarify your learning part’s theories, information.
  6. You can find exercises for your topic and you can put some cool games and energisers if needed to make your training even more enjoyable. For game and energiser ideas, you can check the games BPD.

Top Tips

  • If you want your training schedule to be checked, or you have any other questions regarding training preparation or delivery, you can write your question or request to help.trainers@estiem.org. This mail list contains all accredited ESTIEM trainers who have the experience to help you.
  • Look for opportunities to deliver trainings on topics you are motivated to deliver with and you will be an experienced trainer in no time.
