2012/2013 - Green Supply Chain

While in the past supply chain costs have been purely defined on monetary terms, today’s environment is much more complex and supply chains have to face many more requirements. One of the biggest is the so called “green factor” which gained a huge importance in the last couple of years. Green Supply Chain initiatives have evolved from simple image issues to a value-generating discipline which results in improving efficiencies and increasing cost containment. Due to that fact, supply chains are challenged with being both cost-efficient and resource-efficient at the same time. By setting a strategic focus on environmental aspects, companies nowadays reflect their choices in packaging, distribution and, of course, the product itself. An increased need for Green Supply Chain in the upcoming future is unavoidable - neither for global players, nor for the worldwide industry.

Learning, researching and finding solutions through lectures, company visits and workshops about this topic will be the goal.

Today’s highly dynamic world made the awareness on Crisis and Change Management a must for any organisation to be able to survive and grow.

The global competition concentrated the attention on something that is inevitable when it comes to dealing with crisis and unexpected situations; “Change”. Stability is no longer a valid option and as the leaders of the future, we will be the ones that will be required to set up successful change programmes. Identifying the crises, managing it and most importantly extracting learning out of that crises and using it as a trigger to start a change program is what will differentiate us as a good leader.

During the upcoming year, we will use ESTIEM’s strength of diversity to expand our perspectives on “Crisis and Change Management”. We will be able to observe different crisis situations faced by different regions, efficient/inefficient change management strategies that were used and we will be able to raise our knowledge about one really important issue on the international level. With the seminars, company visits and interactive workshops that will be provided by Vision events, we will be able to hear about real life situations that were held in that specific region, discuss with valuable businessmen and professors and we will create our own output regarding to our personal understanding.

Engagement becomes more and more important in a modern working environment, as engaged employee are more productive, more efficient and more innovative.

Together with a research group from the Aalto University, Helsinki, nine Vision Seminars will find answers to the question "How do places & spaces impact engagement?" . Each participant will reflect his own opinion about engagement and how he/she gets impacted.

This Seminar Series will find interesting and useful similarities between voluntary, successful youth work, as we experience within ESTIEM, and engagement at workplaces.

2006/2007 - Future Resources for Energy and Economy (FREE)

In spite of new developed technologies, manufacturing techniques, discovered materials etc., exponential growing of world industry is just being threatened by something which is supposed to be it’s origin: Energy!

  • Can another substance equal the impact of using oil? Is it finite energy-source?
  • Is Nuclear adventure going to end tragically?
  • Is it possible to determine and realize cold fusion?
  • Does mother nature give us enough material –sun, wind, waves- to survive?
  • How efficiently can we use Hydrogen to produce electricity?
  • Can we increase the number of alternative energy resources?

It’s not coincidence that today’s world politic and economic equilibrium are being shaped by this subjects. From the early ages of civilizations till now, especially after the 18th century,  “industrial revolution”, energy is considered as a material of manufacturing but for today’s consuming world it’s a “must” to survive.

Scientists  and economists  are expecting new energy crises within years. The gallon of  -unrivaled energy source- oil exceeded 70$, and keeps increasing, major petroleum companies are declaring 50 billion $ profit, several countries invests on radioactivity, some other countries decreased the amount of transferred natural gas. All these happened in the year 2005. These data are obvious evidences to research and develop using resources and reserves nowadays.

Consequently the FREE Vision project of ESTIEM, with 15 LG, hundreds of participating students, related-companies, academicians will discuss about theme, share ideas and suggest solutions for this bottleneck. We are mainly focusing on “sustainable growth”.

Therefore we will not only consider the new ways of alternative energy sources but we will also evaluate importance of time, human resources or alternative ways to achieve sustainability.

2005/2006 - Vision of Cycles

During year 2005-2006 the annual Vision seminar series is going to examine and  investigate different aspects on life cycles that occur in business and industrial world. In contemporary market, the deep understanding of the different stages of life cycles  has proven to be the key to success. The competitive advantage arises from analysis of different stages in industry’s life cycle; actions and strategies based on the impacts of product, process or market life cycle tend to gain more revenue, and at the same time issues concerning life cycle assessment, life cycle management and structured  project management increase the eficiency and minimise costs and requirements.

Each of the seminars will focus in more detail to one of the various approaches to life  cycle theories; we shall examine the strategies and managerial decisions that are made in material handling, design and quality improvement. As well we shall get an insight to repetitive and periodical changes that colour the history of a product from idea to retirement – the patterns can be found in many aspects of today's business world, as decisions related to engineering, management, and industry are affected by cyclical developments.

Fast technological development, constantly changing customer preferences, globalisation and the emergence of the information society are all contributing to an ever-more demanding competitive environment. The Vision of Cycles seminars explore the ways how modern companies find ways to cope with the increasing time and cost pressures, utilise their market opportunities in the different stages of industry life cycles, and maintain their competitive edge throughout the product life cycle from the initial idea to retirement.

The following will be the study topics of Vision of Cycles:

  • Life Cycle

  • Product Life Cycle Management

  • Life Cycle Engineering

  • Life Cycle Assessment

  • Market Life Cycle Analysis

  • Maintenance and Continuous Improvement

2004/2005 - Vision of Change

"Business strategies in a changing Europe", "Vision of Change" for short, will be the topic of this Vision Project. Vision is an ESTIEM project, which is held every year with a different topic for the series of seminars. Each Vision Project has its own topic with seminars throughout Europe. For Vision of Change there will be 17 Local Group's which are going to organize a seminar, each with their own subtopic. The seminars will take place from September 2004 to April 2005. Within this time frame each of these seminars will offer a week, which is mainly dedicated to several seminars and workshops, and may contain some other activities like company visits, cultural activities or just some activities to relax and have fun together. You are all more than welcome to the Vision of Change seminars

It is a good chance for you to get to know new cultures, make friends with people from different countries, experience the ESTIEM spirit and maybe the most importantly, join seminars with interesting topics about new business strategies in a changing Europe!! International businesses can have the advantage of having a larger set of suppliers and customers, which can make the business processes more profitable and well known over a wider area. But this also has certain risks, which the companies have to face as well. Because of this internationalisation there will be a greater share of knowledge, which can be beneficial to the whole branch operating in the area. With fewer border limits, it is becoming much easier for companies to go abroad and look for new markets or suppliers.

2003/2004 - InnoVision

InnoVISION is the name of the European wide seminar series about Innovation Management. The Vision seminar series is annually organised by ESTIEM which is an organisation for European STudents of Industrial Engineering and Management. The Vision Project focuses each year on a topic, which is to have a great impact in European business, technology, industry or economy.

The InnoVISION seminars tookplace between October 2003 and April 2004 at over 20 European universities, each of them focusing on a different aspect of the general theme. The Vision project aims at finding innovative approaches to emerging issues in business and also enabling contacts between students, researchers and representatives of business. The project is conluded with a comprehensive publication which is made available for students, universities and companies. The aim of the InnoVISION project is to lighten up what innovation management is about and why innovations and innovation management are essential in business. The seminars cover different aspects of innovation management and the topics handle for example implementing innovation management in companies, promoting creativity in enterprises and commercialising innovations.
